The Highlighter Incident
When it comes to “The Real World”, one of my biggest learning experiences was getting fired from a temp job at a Verizon Wireless store the summer before grad school.

I am a software architect and web developer interested in the intersection of language and the web. I live and work in Burlingame, California, right between San Francisco and Silicon Valley. I believe in using standards-based, forward-looking technologies to solve interesting problems in how people interact with technology -- which is largely visual and psycholinguistic. Because of this, I take a strong interest in topics on end-to-end web development. I think every developer should be as comfortable building out databases as working with jQuery.
I am a Zend Certified Engineer -- one of under a thousand with both PHP5 and Zend Framework Certification. So while my weapon of choice may be a "hacker's" language, I pride myself in using it with the same effective separation of concerns and emphasis on security you would find using any other tool. We can leverage design patterns in PHP5 and the ZF with ease, making excellent websites with safe, legible code. That's the kind of stuff I try to blog about. Outside of work, I love experiencing new restaurants, parks, and cities with my wife, Kayleigh.
